As the FIDE presidential election takes place today during the General Assembly in Samarkand, Wadim Rosenstein’s campaign enters the vote highlighting growing support from chess federations and senior officials across several continents.
In recent weeks, support for Rosenstein and his running mate Gordon Tang, Executive Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia, has come from national federations and prominent figures in Europe and Africa. Among those publicly backing the ticket are European Chess Union President Zurab Azmaiparashvili, French Chess Federation President Eloi Relange and former FIDE Vice President Lewis Ncube, as well as the chess federations of Montenegro and Mozambique. Former FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov also announced his support for Rosenstein in Samarkand this week.
At the centre of Rosenstein’s programme is a focus on strengthening the relationship between FIDE and its member federations, with the aim of ensuring that federations of all sizes see tangible benefits from the international governing body.
Rosenstein brings experience both inside and outside competitive chess. He grew up competing in German youth chess and later built an international business career. Through WR Chess, he has organised and supported elite chess events, helping attract new sponsors and audiences to the sport. His partnership with Tang adds experience in international sports governance and established relationships across Asia.
“Every federation, large or small, should be able to point to what FIDE does for them. Today, too many can’t,” Rosenstein said. “I’ve spent my life around this game, first as a young player and now as an organiser, and I know how much talent is waiting for the right support. Today, delegates have the opportunity to shape a FIDE that serves its members. That is the FIDE Gordon and I want to deliver.”
With delegates gathering in Samarkand for the election, Rosenstein’s campaign is presenting the support it has received in recent weeks as evidence of interest among federations in a programme centred on service, development and stronger engagement with members.
